VA mandates that all new students and those in grades Kindergarten, 3rd, 7th, and 10th receive a vision screening within the first 60 days of school. The school nurse is responsible for completing this task in conjunction with multiple other time sensitive mandates, in addition to the day-to-day needs of students in the clinic.
Mass screenings (especially for elementary schools) can be an extremely time consuming and difficult task. The American Optometric Association estimates that as many as 1/3 of students in need of follow-up eye care are missed in a traditional school screening. This is through no fault of the nurse, but simply due to the large volume of students being screened in a short amount of time, and often with outdated equipment that’s simply not reliable, especially in mass screenings.
VisioCheck is the Conexus comprehensive technology-based vision program designed specifically to support school nurses in their mass vision screenings and mandated reporting. The program can provide services to roughly 400 students per hour (in a traditional setting this would take several full days), offering a valuable time savings to your nurse and school! Results (both pass and refer) are communicated to parents in a full-color, visual and informative report, helping to insure that parents have a good understanding of how their child’s vision may be impacting their performance in the classroom. Qualifying students who cannot afford follow-up care will have access to a voucher program providing free eye exams and glasses.
